My first ‘Royal’ writing assignment

By louisewrites, Oct 2 2015 10:37AM

I had a ‘right royal experience’ in September when I met Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.

As a member of the Board of the charity Working Wonders ( which works to find and fund apprenticeships for underprivileged young people, I was invited to Orangebox Young People’s Centre in Halifax for the royal reception.

The Working Wonders Board is made up of a group of local business people with a variety of skills, including finance, youth work, marketing, digital technology, training and development. As a copywriter/corporate journalist I help the charity with its marketing and promotions activities, writing blogs and press releases.

The Prince is patron of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, a passionate supporter of young people’s organisations and patron of the arts. He was shown around the Orangebox facilities, which include a state-of-the-art recording studio, roof-top skate park, indoor bouldering wall and café. He chatted to young people taking part in employability workshops and then unveiled a plaque commemorating his visit. He thanked everyone and said “keep up the excellent work”.

I find working for a charity on a pro bono basis extremely rewarding. People are always so grateful and appreciate that I’m giving my time freely. But I see this as an investment. It’s valuable experience, an opportunity to work in partnership with other professional business people and is a great way to highlight my copywriting and business journalism skills and ability.

If you’re interested in connecting with charities and using your skills in meaningful ways and you are based in Yorkshire, take a look at the Yorkshire Mafia’s Skill Will initiative which links local businesses with charities. That's me second from the right.

Voluntary work

Having worked for the Community Foundation for Calderdale on a voluntary basis, providing copy for  press releases, websites, blogs, leaflets and booklets, my main focus now is the spin off charity

Working Wonders.

I am on the Board of this charity which supports young people into employment and apprenticeships.
